Privacy and data security policy
Last updated October 18, 2026
Symmetric Energy ("Symmetric", "we") designs, installs and services solar and battery systems in California. This policy explains what customer energy data we collect, why, how we protect it, and the choices you have. It applies to the Symmetric Fleet monitoring service and to data we receive from utilities with your authorisation.
Data we collect
- Utility data (only with your authorisation through your utility, or a file you give us): account and service-agreement identifiers, service address, meter interval readings (energy delivered and received), rate schedule and billing history.
- System data: production, battery and consumption readings from your inverter or battery manufacturer's monitoring platform, and the equipment and installation records for your system.
- Contact details you give us: name, email, phone and address.
How we use it (primary purposes)
- Monitor your system and detect faults, by comparing what your utility meter recorded with what your equipment reported.
- Estimate bill savings and compare your bills with what they would have been without the system.
- Design, size and quote equipment you ask us about, and provide warranty and service work.
We do not sell customer data, use it for advertising, or disclose it to third parties for their own purposes. We use it for a secondary purpose only with your separate, express consent.
Customer portal
If we invite you to the monitoring portal, you sign in with your email and see your own system: production, estimated savings, a plain-language health status, and reports. You do not see other customers' systems. Connecting a utility account or a Tesla account from the portal shares that account's energy data with Symmetric so we can monitor and service your system. You can revoke a utility connection at the utility, and you can ask us to remove portal access.
Who we share it with
Only service providers acting on our behalf under written contracts that require them to protect the data and use it only for our primary purposes (for example, our cloud database and hosting providers), and the equipment manufacturers and service partners needed to repair your system. We disclose data where required by law, and then only the minimum required.
How we protect it
- Encryption in transit (TLS 1.2 or higher; mutual-TLS with the utility) and at rest.
- Credentials and certificates held in an encrypted secrets vault, never in application code.
- Role-based access with row-level security: staff see only the organisations they belong to; homeowners see only their own sites.
- Audit logging of data imports and administrative changes; least-privilege access for staff.
- We will notify affected customers and the utility of a breach involving their data as required by law and program rules.
How long we keep it
For as long as you are a customer and we provide monitoring, warranty or service for your system, and then no longer than needed for those purposes or as required by law. When you revoke authorisation we stop collecting new utility data; you can ask us to delete what we hold.
Your choices
- Revoke utility data sharing at any time on your utility's website (or ask us to do it for you).
- Ask for a copy of the data we hold about you, a correction, or deletion.
- Contact us with questions or complaints at privacy@symmetricenergy.com. You can also contact the California Public Utilities Commission.
Changes
We will post changes here with a new date, and notify customers who have authorised utility data sharing of any material change before it takes effect.
